Deluzio Leads Bipartisan Push for Action on Rail Safety in Congress
Three years after the derailment, Pennsylvania Congressman Chris Deluzio is not backing down
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (D-PA-17) marked the three-year anniversary of the Norfolk Southern train derailment by joining with Members of Congress from both parties, union leaders, and local leaders to call for Congress to pass rail safety legislation. Congressman Deluzio called for his bill—the Railway Safety Act of 2025—to pass through committee or to be included in the upcoming must-pass Surface Transportation Reauthorization. Congressman Deluzio represents the people of Beaver County, the Pennsylvania county just over the border from the site of the 2023 derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
"Three years is a long time. Some people, especially in DC, seem to have forgotten about the 2023 Norfolk Southern derailment: but I haven’t, and I won’t,” said Congressman Deluzio. “The big railroads do not want anything—even our safety—to get in the way of their unending lust for profit at any cost. People in my community and our neighbors in Ohio demand action. We have to make rail safer, and that means standing strong against the corporate power that's working against the rest of us who live or work around the tracks. Enough already: let’s pass my bipartisan, commonsense Railway Safety Act.”
Along with Congressman Deluzio, the event was also attended by:
- Congressman Mike Rulli (OH-06)
- Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01), Ranking Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials
- Congressman John Garamendi (CA-08)
- Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17)
- Matt Pacifico, Mayor of Altoona, PA
- Michael Lombardo, Mayor of Pittston, PA
- Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL–CIO
- Michael Baldwin, President of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalman, Chairman of the Rail Labor Division of the Transportation Trades Department (AFL–CIO)
- Edward Kelly, General President of the International Association of Firefighters
Representatives of other unions and organizations were also in attendance.

A member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee, Congressman Deluzio is one of Congress’ most dogged advocates for rail safety. Ever since the 2023 derailment just outside of his Western Pennsylvania congressional district, he has been leading the charge to pass a comprehensive rail safety bill that will make communities and workers safer. Congressman Deluzio co-hosted a roundtable with Republican Michael Rulli to discuss the fight for rail safety with rail workers nearby East Palestine, Ohio last summer
