Rep. Deluzio Joins Dr. Biden, Cabinet Members at Pittsburgh Airport and Workforce Hub to Discuss Job Training and Pathways

July 19, 2023

MOON TOWNSHIP, P.A. — Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) welcomed First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su to Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District. They visited the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and sites related to the regional “Investing in America Workforce Hub” to discuss ways the local community is working together to expand pathways to good-paying jobs for rebuilding our infrastructure.

“Western Pennsylvania helped power America’s industrial revolution, but lousy deals left our community out to dry. Many thought that our region’s manufacturing had no place in a globalized society. They were dead wrong,” said Rep. Deluzio. “Now we are rebuilding our infrastructure and manufacturing right here at home, and creating good, union jobs to fuel this new economy. Dr. Biden, Secretary Buttigieg, and Acting Secretary Su see Western Pennsylvania’s potential—that's why they’re here. Federal investments in our airport, workers, infrastructure, and industry will help make this vision a reality and spread greater shared prosperity across our community. Western Pennsylvania can, and will, once again lead the way in American manufacturing.”

The Biden Administration designated the Pittsburgh region as a Workforce Hub earlier this year. With a focus on enhancing local workforce development efforts, this White House will join with partners on the ground to support technical education, job training, and pre-apprenticeship programs. This new White House initiative is part of a cross-agency, collaborative effort by President Biden’s Administration to ensure businesses can fill and Americans can access the good jobs created by legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act

The Pittsburgh region was selected as a hub, in part, because it is home to many world-class universities. It is also a place that connects innovation across critical sectors and shows a strong growth and experience in advanced manufacturing such as robotics, biomanufacturing, clean energy, and batteries. The growth of these industries—along with significant, targeted investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in transportation, water infrastructure, and more—will continue to drive significant demand for talent.

Congressman Deluzio, along with County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Mayor Ed Gainey, joined the First Lady and Secretaries on a tour of the Pittsburgh Airport construction site, which has received more than $20 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. They also visited the future on-site childcare facility and heard from workers about pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs in the region.
