Deluzio, Stefanik, Daines, Baldwin Reintroduce WWII Nurses Congressional Gold Medal Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Deluzio (D- PA-17) joined with a bipartisan group of colleagues to reintroduce bipartisan, bicameral legislation to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the brave and heroic women who served in World War II as members of the United States Army Nurse Corps and the United States Navy Nurse Corps. The other members of Congress leading this bill include House Republican Chairwoman Stefanik, (R-NY-21), Senator Daines (R-MT), and Senator Baldwin (D-WI).

"Tens of thousands of World War II nurses worked tirelessly, often in harm’s way, to save the lives of American and Allied troops,” said Congressman Deluzio, House Armed Services Committee member and Navy veteran. “Many lost their lives even as they tried to save others. America should never forget the sacrifice and bravery of the WWII nurses who helped us beat the Nazis and Imperial Japan. I’m proud to co-lead this bipartisan legislation to finally give these heroic nurses the recognition they earned.” 

“America must recognize the Nurses who served in World War II for their unimaginable courage, bravery, and sacrifice in the name of ensuring victory," stated Chairwoman Stefanik." These nurses saved numerous lives under extreme conditions and they are nothing short of heroes who deserve every bit of recognition." 

In 1935, prior to the start of World War II, there were fewer than 600 United States Army Nurses and 1,700 United States Navy Nurses on active duty. By the time the war ended, more than 59,000 Army Nurses and 14,000 Navy Nurses had volunteered to serve. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation will award a Congressional Gold Medal to the brave women who served in World War II as members of the United States Army Nurse Corps and United States Navy Nurse Corps.
