Deluzio Statement on President Biden’s Visit to Beaver County, Support for Railway Safety Act

February 16, 2024

BEAVER COUNTY, PA — Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) welcomed President Joe Biden to his congressional district in Darlington Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, which was impacted by the Norfolk Southern train derailment on February 3, 2023. At the event, Congressman Deluzio and President Biden met with local leaders and first responders from the Darlington community about the response to the train derailment and the President delivered remarks.

After the event, the Congressman shared the following statement:

"I’m grateful that the Biden Administration has been on the ground responding to Norfolk Southern’s toxic train derailment and providing federal resources since the beginning. It was important for the President to spend time in Western Pennsylvania, where so many were affected by Norfolk Southern’s toxic derailment in East Palestine, and to increase the pressure on those in Congress who are blocking my bill, the Railway Safety Act.

“It is unacceptable to me that Congress has not yet taken action on the Railway Safety Act. While the powerful rail lobby might not like it, folks like us who live near the tracks expect something to change to make us safer. We need to make these big railroads operate more safely—because history shows that we cannot trust them to regulate themselves. I am in the fight for my constituents and for rail safety for as long as it takes. Let’s pass the Railway Safety Act.”
