Deluzio Secures $132,000 for Sharpsburg Stormwater Improvements at Kennedy Park

July 26, 2024

SHARPSBURG, PA — Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) announced a $132,000 federal investment for the community of Sharpsburg. This funding will help reduce the risk of flooding in the Borough, especially around Kennedy Park, which frequently floods and becomes unusable for neighbors and recreators.

Congressman Deluzio announced the funding at the Sharpsburg Municipal Building today and presented an oversized check to regional and Sharpsburg leaders including Adrian Lang (Council President of Sharpsburg Borough), Corey Chai (Borough Councilperson), Jodi Klebick (Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization), Jeanne Clark (ALCOSAN), Senator Lindsey Williams, and other local leaders

The group had a briefing meeting to discuss the project and visited nearby Kennedy Park. This stormwater project is estimated to save approximately 714,000 gallons of water from hitting the combined sewer system. This funding will support engineering and design work for the Kennedy Park improvements.

“We know the damage heavy rain can bring: flooded roads, water in buildings, and swampy ground that can make a spot like Kennedy Park hard to use,” said Congressman Deluzio. “The federal funds I'm announcing today will fund engineering and design work to support improvements to the borough’s stormwater management system, giving Sharpsburg Borough resources to help protect folks from the dangers of stormwater and sewage flooding or overflow. These improvements should help out nearby residents and businesses in Sharpsburg—reducing the overall risk of flooding in the Borough during lousy weather.”

This funding for Etna is part of a larger group of federal investments that Congressman Deluzio requested through the House Appropriations Committee. When the funding measures passed into law in early March, Congressman locked in $15.5 million for 15 projects across Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District.

Today’s announcement follows the $25 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant Congressman Deluzio and Pennsylvania’s Senators helped secure for the Borough of Sharpsburg. This grant from the Department of Transportation will build a bridge and other infrastructure to reconnect Sharpsburg with the Allegheny riverfront—an important economic and quality of life improvement for the area.
